A field, a Super 8 camera, and a love that feels like home
Some sessions just make you want to bottle up the whole evening and keep it forever—and AJ & Jeromy’s engagement session was exactly that.
We met up in a bluffside field just outside Kansas City, Missouri. It was one of those still, overcast spring evenings where everything felt frozen in time waiting for life to sprout up from the ground again. The kind of session that didn’t feel like posing or performing—it felt like them. Joyful. Playful. Honest. And so full of love and life.
AJ and Jeromy met through the Fusion program at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, which already tells you a lot about their hearts. They both went overseas to serve in Central Asia—on different teams, but united in mission. And once they returned home to the States, something just clicked. It was like watching magnets draw toward each other. Steady, sure, and unstoppable.
Jeromy proposed this past winter (cue the happy tears), and they’re getting married this fall—and I’m so honored to be the one who gets to photograph it.
When I photograph couples, my goal is never to just “get pretty photos.” It’s to create a space where they can breathe deep, be fully themselves, and just be together. The images we get are a reflection of who they are, not just what they look like.
For AJ and Jeromy, that meant bringing along their guitars, books, and even a Super 8mm camera—things that represent their creativity, their shared hobbies, and the quiet joy they’ve found in each other. These weren’t props. They were pieces of their story.
They ran through the field, embraced without hesitation, and laughed the kind of laugh that makes your whole chest light. We chased the sun as it dropped behind the hills and let the evening unfold naturally—no pressure, no expectations, just presence.
From their denim-on-denim outfits to their vintage details and carefree energy, AJ and Jeromy brought such a fun, hipster flair to their shoot—but the real beauty came from how clearly they love each other. Not just the giggly, flirty kind (although there was plenty of that), but the rooted, mission-minded, Christ-centered kind of love that builds something eternal.
They’re the kind of couple that feels like sunshine and slow mornings and worship music playing on an old speaker. Quirky in the best way. Grounded in something bigger. So deeply themselves.
Photographing AJ and Jeromy felt less like a session and more like spending an evening with old friends—full of laughter, movement, and moments that mattered. Their love is the kind that’s playful and light but also deeply rooted in something steady and eternal.
It’s always an honor to photograph couples who bring their full selves to the experience—who see their photos not just as a checklist, but as a chance to tell the story of who they are. And these two did exactly that.
AJ & Jeromy, thank you for trusting me to hold this part of your story. I’m still smiling thinking about your joy, your energy, and the way you love each other. What a gift it is to witness that.
