One of my favorite things about elopements is how beautifully nature wraps itself around your story. The wind, the light, the movement—all of it plays a part. And your dress? It’s one of the biggest ways you can let the landscape elevate the emotion of your day.
As an elopement photographer who spends more time on cliffsides, coastlines, and forest trails than in ballrooms, I have a few opinions about what truly works for an adventure-centered celebration. But before anything else…

This is always the first thing I tell my couples. You deserve to feel bridal, beautiful, and fully yourself. If your dress makes you light up—if it makes you feel like the truest version of you—then it’s already the perfect choice. Comfort and confidence will always translate in your photos. Always.
Everything else is just personal preference and a little experience from photographing dozens of outdoor elopements.

Your elopement day is likely going to involve walking, exploring, climbing rocks, chasing light, or wandering through forests. A dress that restricts your legs or is hard to sit, walk, or breathe in will make the day feel more constrained than it needs to.
Mermaid gowns, for example, are gorgeous—but they’re notoriously difficult for movement-heavy elopements. If your day includes hikes, uneven terrain, or running along the coastline, you’ll probably appreciate something less structured.
Flowy A-lines, slip dresses, boho silhouettes, and anything that allows your legs to move naturally are amazing choices for adventures.

Nothing beats an epic wind moment. Truly—some of the most dramatic, emotional photos come from a gust of wind picking up a bride’s dress and making the whole scene feel alive.
Flowy fabrics like chiffon, tulle, organza, and lightweight silk photograph beautifully outdoors. They create motion. They add softness. They feel romantic and natural in a way that complements cliffsides, oceans, meadows, and open skies.
This doesn’t mean you have to wear a huge ball gown (although ball gowns can look insanely cool in nature!). I’ve seen this same beautiful movement with silky form-fitting dresses too—the key is choosing material that isn’t stiff or heavy.

This one is so important for adventure elopements. Think about what feels right for your day:
Either option is totally normal and totally beautiful—just choose what makes your day feel easiest and least stressful.

Elopements are adventurous by nature. You might walk through dirt trails, step into sand, climb over rocks, or brush past mossy logs. And honestly? That little bit of dirt adds a certain magic to the story.
Think of it like proof that you lived your day fully—no stress, no holding back, no worrying about perfection. Your dress is part of the adventure. A little earth on the hem is a sign of a day well lived.
If you’re someone who wants to keep your dress pristine, that’s totally okay too—but choosing a gown you’re comfortable moving freely in will make the entire experience feel easier and more fun.

You don’t have to match the scenery, but you can let it enhance your overall vibe:
Nature becomes part of the backdrop—your dress helps bring the whole scene to life.

At the end of the day, your elopement dress should make you feel beautiful and free. It should support your movement, catch the wind, and allow the landscape to complement your love story—not fight against it.
When you choose a dress that feels like you, and that welcomes the adventure, the photos become effortlessly magical.
