A Cozy, All-Inclusive, All-Day Celebration in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Some elopements feel like stepping into the exact kind of day you always dream of photographing — slow, intentional, cozy, emotional, and rooted deeply in presence. Jake and Ffiona’s elopement in Afton, Virginia was exactly that.
They chose to stay (and celebrate!) at The Indigo House, a unique bed and breakfast tucked into the hills of Afton. It’s one of those places that instantly feels like home — warm, intimate, and designed for couples who want a peaceful escape. What made this location even more incredible is that The Indigo House accommodates both weddings and elopements and even offers special all-inclusive packages specifically for couples choosing to elope.
Jake and Ffiona’s package included their stay, my one-night stay, a gorgeous bouquet, breakfast and lunch, their elopement cake, and champagne — all wrapped neatly into one experience. Truly such a dream setup for any couple wanting simplicity without sacrificing intentionality.
This was a full 12-hour day — one of those perfectly paced elopements that made me fall even more in love with the beauty of documenting an entire day from slow sunrise to starlit celebration.

Here’s exactly how their day unfolded:
9:00–10:00am — Breakfast + Coffee at The Indigo House

5:10–5:45pm — Hike to Blackrock Summit
5:50–6:15pm — Ceremony on the rocks
6:15–7:00pm — Sunset Portraits + First Dance / Champagne
7:00–7:30pm — Hike back down
7:30–8:30pm — Drive back to The Indigo House
8:40–9:00pm — Cake Cutting + First Dance under the stars
9:00–9:30pm — Planned Campfire / Stargazing (rained out)
9:30pm — Enjoy your evening of wedded bliss
Now let’s walk through the story of this incredible day.

Their day began the way every elopement morning should — slow, cozy, and full of soft laughter.
Jake and Ffiona stayed in their pajamas, sipping coffee and enjoying their handmade breakfast served in bed. They giggled under blankets, soaked in the quiet, and let themselves be fully present for the beginning of their forever. It was intimate, unrushed, and the perfect way to ease into a day meant solely for them.

After breakfast, they got dressed and we headed out to explore the Blue Ridge Tunnel — an incredibly dark, moody, impressive spot. It’s long, echoey, and so unique to wander through together. These two held hands through the darkness, laughing through the moments where all you could see were shadows and the small circle of light at the other end.
From there, we drove to Rockfish Valley Overlook, where they found a quiet spot to sit down and write their vows side-by-side. Watching them pause, reflect, and write with the mountains stretching out beneath them… that moment alone felt like the emotional centerpiece of their day.

The Indigo House prepared the sweetest picnic-basket lunch for them — rustic, cozy, and unbelievably charming. The afternoon was warm and peaceful, giving them time to breathe, reset, and savor a slow moment before getting ready.

This part of the day was so soft and sweet.
Jake and Ffiona got ready in different nooks of the space, enjoying the quiet charm that The Indigo House is known for. I photographed their details — rings, vow books, florals — while they had time to relax and enjoy every second.

Their first look happened just outside the Indigo House in their back meadow with 360 degree mountain views. This moment was emotional — you could see how deeply they love each other. Tears, smiles, long hugs… everything an elopement first look should be.

I drove them (because yes — if you let me, I always chauffeur!) up Skyline Drive toward Blackrock Summit. Just a note for anyone planning the same adventure:
An NPS pass is required to access this area. It’s absolutely worth it.
Blackrock Summit has a designated trail, making it fairly easy to maneuver. But — and this is important — if you plan on exploring off the trail like we did to reach more dramatic rock formations, sturdy shoes are a must. And keep an eye out for snakes, as this area can have them tucked between rocks.

We hiked up to the exact spot I scouted beforehand — wide open views, dramatic rock formations, and enough solitude for an intimate ceremony.
Jake and Ffiona exchanged vows they had written that morning, and then included a handfasting ceremony, which added such a beautiful symbolic touch. They wrapped their hands together, tying them into their promises with a visual reminder of the covenant they were making.
The clouds rolled in behind them, giving everything this moody, cinematic glow.

After sealing their ceremony with a kiss, I played their first dance song on my speaker.
They danced among the rocks as the light softened, the rain clouds drifting across the horizon in the most dramatic way.
We wandered the rocks for portraits and were blessed with the tiniest peek of sunset just before the sky officially dimmed.

We made our way back down the trail, drove together to The Indigo House, and ended the night with their cake and champagne celebration.
They had planned a campfire and stargazing session, but rain greeted us back at the B&B — honestly, adding its own cozy charm to the ending of their day.
Still, their energy was joyful, peaceful, and so full of love.
A perfect end to a full, meaningful elopement.

Jake and Ffiona’s elopement was everything an intentional day should be — slow in the morning, adventurous in the afternoon, emotional in the evening, and meaningful from start to finish.
From the all-inclusive Indigo House experience to the moody beauty of Blackrock Summit, their day was crafted with intention and overflowing with love.
If you’re dreaming of an elopement that blends cozy comfort with mountain adventure, this Virginia elopement is the perfect inspiration.
