There’s something really special about waking up before the rest of the world. The beaches are quiet. The roads are empty. The morning light feels softer. And for a couple choosing to elope, there’s something beautiful about beginning your wedding day with nothing but the two of you, the ocean, and the space to actually be present for it all.
That’s exactly how Jace and Danika chose to begin their Southern Oregon elopement.
In July, these two met me on the coast before sunrise so we could have a quiet stretch of beach almost entirely to ourselves. No crowds, no distractions, no rushing through their ceremony. Just the two of them, the sound of the waves, and the beginning of their marriage. It was perfect.

Before heading down the cliffs to the beach for their ceremony, Jace and Danika shared a quiet first look.
There’s something so special about that moment — especially on an elopement day. The anticipation, the nerves, the excitement of finally seeing each other dressed for the day you’ve been imagining for so long. I gave them a little space to take it all in before making our way down toward the beach.

There’s something about a sunrise ceremony that feels especially intimate.
Jace and Danika exchanged their vows while the morning was still quiet, giving them a few precious hours before the rest of the world really started moving. After their ceremony, we spent some time wandering Secret Beach together, soaking in the morning and taking photographs without feeling like we needed to rush off to the next thing.
One of my favorite things about elopements is that the day doesn’t have to be built around a strict schedule. We can create space for the moments that matter — whether that’s exchanging vows, exploring a new place, eating cake, or simply sitting together and taking it all in. And Jace and Danika’s day was a perfect example of that.

Once we finished our time at Secret Beach, we headed south toward the California border for a completely different landscape: the Redwoods.
Southern Oregon is one of my favorite places to photograph elopements because you can experience so much variety in a single day. You can start with rugged coastline and ocean views in the morning and find yourself surrounded by towering ancient trees just a little later. The Redwoods were also especially meaningful for Jace and Danika because they gave us an opportunity to memorialize their pups.
We took a few photographs for them among the trees — a small but incredibly meaningful way to include the dogs they love in their wedding day. I think those are some of my favorite parts of photographing elopements: the little details that might not make sense to anyone else but mean everything to the couple. Your wedding day gets to be yours. That means making room for the people, places, traditions, and memories that have shaped your relationship.

After exploring the redwoods, we headed back to their VRBO for a little change of pace. Their front porch ended up being the perfect spot for a few more photographs. There’s something I love about incorporating the places where couples are actually staying into their galleries. It makes the photographs feel more like their day rather than simply a collection of pretty locations. And sometimes, the most meaningful photographs happen in the seemingly ordinary places: A front porch. A cup of coffee. Bare feet. A quiet moment together.
Those are the pieces of an elopement day that you’ll want to remember years from now.

One thing I really encourage couples to consider when planning a full-day elopement is giving yourselves permission to take a break. You don’t have to spend every minute of your wedding day taking photographs.
After our morning together, Jace and Danika and I went our separate ways for a few hours. They got to rest, relax, and enjoy some time together privately while I had a chance to recharge before we met back up for the evening. And then we got to do it all over again. Except this time, there was cake. And champagne. And one of the most beautiful beaches on the Southern Oregon Coast.
That evening, we met back up at Whaleshead Beach for a celebratory picnic. There was cake, champagne, plenty of laughter, and time to simply celebrate what they had just done: they got married!
As the sun started to drop, we wandered around the beach and took advantage of that gorgeous golden evening light. Eventually, the sun disappeared and everything shifted into that dreamy blue-hour glow that makes the Oregon Coast feel almost otherworldly. We took some of my favorite photographs of the entire day during this little window between sunset and darkness. And then, instead of calling it a night, we built a beach bonfire.

There’s something really fitting about ending an elopement day around a fire. After a full day of exploring, adventuring, celebrating, and soaking everything in, we slowed down again. The waves were still crashing in the distance. The sky was dark. The fire was glowing. And Jace and Danika got to simply enjoy being married.
No more timeline. No more photographs to take. Just the two of them, ending their first day as a married couple exactly how they wanted to.

Jace and Danika’s day is such a beautiful example of why I love elopements so much. Their wedding wasn’t confined to a single venue or a few hours of photographs. It was an entire experience.
They watched the sunrise together. They exchanged vows on a quiet beach. They explored the redwoods. They found ways to include their pups in their day. They rested. They ate cake and drank champagne. They watched the sunset. They built a bonfire. And they did it all at their own pace.
That’s what I want for my couples.
I don’t want you to feel like you’re squeezing your marriage into a wedding day checklist. I want to help you create a day that feels like you — whether that means hiking through the mountains, exploring the coastline, sitting on a quiet porch, eating your favorite dessert, or ending the night around a fire.
Serving Jace and Danika reminded me all over again just how much I love helping couples turn their elopement day dreams into something real. Because your wedding day can be so much more than a ceremony. It can be an adventure, a celebration, a quiet morning, a wild coastline, a favorite memory, and the beginning of an entire lifetime together. And I can’t think of a better way to get married.
