If you are holding an elopement ceremony or taking photos inside of any national or state park, you will need to have a NPS pass to enter the park. I always recommend purchasing the America the Beautiful pass beforehand online, as it has the most diversity for adventurous couples (and the best deal!).
Permits for Washington elopements vary depending on your location. In some places, you typically won’t need a permit for a simple ceremony with a small group of people, especially if you aren’t bringing in decorations, props, or setting up anything. However, permits are often required when eloping on National Park, State Park, or BLM/Coastal lands, so it’s important to check the specific rules for your chosen location.
Guest count requirements vary depending on where you choose to elope in Washington. While many locations don't have strict guest limits, national parks like Mount Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades have location-specific group size restrictions, with many ceremony sites allowing up to 12 total participants, including the couple, guests, officiant, photographer, and any other vendors. No matter who you want by your side, I'll help you choose a location that accommodates your group while following all park regulations.

NAVIGATING YOUR WASHINGTON MARRIAGE LICENSE
Washington has a pretty straightforward marriage license process! You do not need to be a Washington resident to get married in the state. You can apply for a marriage license from any Washington county, and your ceremony can take place anywhere within Washington State.
How to obtain a license:
You will need to apply through a Washington county auditor's office either online or in person.
- Many counties allow you to start the application online before arriving.
- Both partners must complete the application and provide the required information.
- Washington has a 3-day waiting period after your license is issued before you can legally get married (you can usually get this waived for a small fee).
- Your marriage license is valid for 60 days after it is issued.
What to bring:
- Valid photo identification (driver’s license, passport, etc.)
- Social Security numbers
- Marriage license application
- Marriage license fee (varies by county, typically around $70–$100)
For the ceremony:
- You'll need an officiant and 2 witnesses for your ceremony

Pro Tip: Most of my couples opt to get legally married in their home state/county, and then celebrate their official marriage day on their elopement day through reading vows to one another. This just skips some of those logistics within your travel timeline so that you can fully focus on your elopement experience without the stress of logistics. For some couples, getting legally married on their elopement day is super important, and they happily go through these steps to ensure that happens. Either way you choose, I'm here to support you through the process and guide you through the logistics!
