Keeping it simple with what to wear: dress comfortable! Your level of comfort will be reflected in your photos. It’s already awkward enough being in front of a camera, so give yourself a break and choose something from your wardrobe that is tried and true. One person’s floral dress might be the next person’s jeans and t-shirt, but that’s okay! Wear something that you are comfortable and able to move around in. Our goal here is for your photos to reflect YOU!
My biggest recommendation for any photoshoot is to dress in timeless colors. These would include clothing with neutral colors such as: whites, creams, tans, and blacks. Earth tones are also good options if you’re looking for a pop of color.
Here are a few reasons why to choose timeless colors:
This might be self explanatory, but it needs to be said: dress for the season and location that you are shooting in! You can bundle up really cute in winter coats and ear muffs for a snowy session, and likewise, you can flaunt that crop top and jean shorts for a summer lake session. Again, your comfort is important here as it is expressed in your photos.
Be mindful of choosing clothing that distracts from your face! Avoid wearing outfits with large logos or busy patterns. Subtle, smaller patterns work best. Think flannels, florals, etc.
ALL THE BOYS OUT THERE!!! It is totally your decision to wear your beloved baseball cap. However, be mindful about how this will look in your portraits. Your girl might not be the happiest about the inability to see your face or the shadows that the cap might create on both of you. I have seen this done really well and really poorly, so it’s ultimately up to you!
Keep in mind that your outfit choices play into the vibe of your photos. Do you want really playful, fun, movement photos? Or are you looking for some quiet and intimate vibes? OR both? Think about the affect your outfit might have with the mood you are going for. Example: you can run around and have fun in a flowy floral dress, but can you do the same in a tight cocktail dress? Not saying that either are bad, but your choice might play a small factor in the activities we do in your shoot or the outcome of those activities.
