One of the most common questions I get from my couples is: “What kind of shoes should we wear for our elopement?”
And honestly — my answer is always the same: Honestly, it’s completely up to you. It’s YOUR day!
Elopements are all about ditching the rules and doing what feels right for you. Whether you’re hiking up a mountain, strolling along a lakeshore, or saying your vows on a cliffside — your shoes (or lack of them) should fit your vibe and your adventure.
But if you’re still feeling stuck, here are a few tips to help you pick the perfect pair (or go barefoot!).

Many couples choose to hike in sturdy hiking boots and then change into dress shoes or heels for their ceremony and portraits. That way, you get the best of both worlds — comfort and style. Plus, a quick shoe change can totally shift the look of your photos!
Some couples wear hiking boots the entire day, and honestly, I love it. There’s something raw and adventurous about a wedding dress paired with dusty boots — it tells the story of your day exactly as it happened. No need to clean up the dirt or pretend you didn’t just hike to an epic overlook.
If you want something a little more formal without losing the practicality, Blundstones, Danner boots, or leather ankle boots are amazing choices. They look great in photos, are comfortable to walk in, and fit that effortlessly cool elopement vibe.
Yes, really — going barefoot is always an option, and it’s always cute. Whether you’re standing in soft sand, a grassy meadow, or even dipping your toes in a lake, there’s something so romantic and freeing about feeling the earth beneath your feet as you say your vows. Just make sure the terrain is safe and comfortable before you kick off your shoes!
Depending on your dress, you might not even see your shoes! If your gown is long or flowy, feel free to pick something comfortable and supportive underneath. (Bonus points if it’s something you can dance or climb rocks in.)
At the end of the day, your elopement is about experiencing the moment — not suffering through blisters for the sake of a cute shoe. Pick something that makes you feel good, keeps you stable on your feet, and matches the adventure you’re about to have.
Whether you’re rocking hiking boots, barefoot sandals, or your favorite pair of sneakers — wear what makes sense for you. The best elopement shoes are the ones that let you move freely, laugh fully, and forget you’re even wearing them. So lace up (or don’t), step out, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
