How to Elope at the Elk Flats | Oregon

If you’ve ever fallen in love with those dreamy Oregon Coast photos of couples standing on grassy cliffs above dramatic sea stacks, there’s a good chance you’ve been looking at Elk Flats Trail.

Nestled inside Oswald West State Park, just south of Cannon Beach, Elk Flats feels almost otherworldly. Moss-covered forests open into sweeping coastal meadows before revealing one of the most breathtaking cliffside overlooks on the entire Oregon Coast. It’s wild, dramatic, and unbelievably romantic.

As an Oregon elopement photographer, it’s one of my favorite places to bring adventurous couples.

That said, there’s one thing you should know before planning your ceremony here:

It isn’t exactly a secret anymore.

Social media has made Elk Flats one of the most photographed locations on the Oregon Coast. During summer weekends you’ll likely pass hikers on the trail and may have to wait your turn at the overlook.

The good news? With thoughtful planning (and the right timeline), you can still have an incredibly intimate experience while enjoying one of Oregon’s most magical landscapes.

Where is the Elk Flats?

Elk Flats is located inside Oswald West State Park, about:

• 15 minutes south of Cannon Beach
• 15 minutes north of Manzanita
• 1 hour 45 minutes from Portland
• Along Highway 101 on Oregon’s North Coast

One of my favorite things about Elk Flats is that it’s incredibly easy to include during a Cannon Beach elopement. Instead of spending your entire wedding day at Haystack Rock, you can experience two completely different landscapes in one day:

• dramatic cliffside overlooks
• iconic beach scenery
• coastal forests
• hidden coves
• sea stacks
• incredible sunset light

It gives your gallery so much variety while keeping driving to a minimum.

Is Elk Flats Difficult to Hike?

Yes—but only moderately. The trail is approximately:

• 2.9 miles roundtrip
• Around 600 feet of elevation gain
• Usually takes 1.5–2 hours with photo stops

The hike begins fairly gently before reaching several steeper sections. You’ll walk through lush coastal forest before emerging onto open grassy bluffs overlooking the Pacific. The final overlook isn’t technical, but there are steep drop-offs nearby, so you’ll want sturdy hiking boots and plenty of caution—especially if the trail is wet. Winter and spring can be muddy and slippery, while summer and early fall usually offer the best conditions.

A Quick Note About Leave No Trace Principles

The Oregon Coast is beautiful because people continue to care for it. When you elope at Elk Flats, please help preserve it by following Leave No Trace principles:

• Stay on established trails.
• Avoid standing too close to cliff edges.
• Pack out everything you bring.
• Respect wildlife.
• Keep ceremonies simple and low-impact.
• Leave the overlook exactly as you found it.

These fragile coastal ecosystems recover very slowly, and protecting them ensures future couples can enjoy them too!

Is Elk Flats Good for an Elopement Ceremony?

It absolutely can be. I recommend Elk Flats for couples who:

• want dramatic cliff views
• don’t mind hiking
• are comfortable around heights
• are planning an intimate ceremony
• value adventure over convenience

However, I generally don’t recommend it for:

• large guest counts
• elderly family members
• anyone with mobility concerns
• couples wanting complete privacy during peak summer weekends

Because the overlook is relatively small, intimate ceremonies with just the couple (or only a few guests) tend to work best. I’d also expect to potentially see other people getting married there at the same time.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope at Elk Flats?

One of the questions I get asked most is whether you need a permit to elope at Elk Flats—and the answer is: it depends.

If you’re planning a simple, leave-no-trace ceremony with just the two of you (or a few loved ones), no décor, and no setup that impacts other visitors, many couples are able to exchange vows here without obtaining a special use permit. However, larger gatherings, ceremonies with arches, chairs, decorations, exclusive use of an area, or other non-traditional park activities may require approval from Oregon State Parks. Permit requirements can also change over time, so it’s always a good idea to check with the park before finalizing your plans.

One of the things I help all of my couples with is navigating these logistics. If a permit is needed, I’ll point you in the right direction and help make sure your plans align with the park’s guidelines. My goal is to make the planning process feel simple, so you can spend less time worrying about paperwork and more time getting excited about your adventure.

Crowd Control at the Elk Flats

This is probably the biggest misconception about Elk Flats. Many people assume it’s a hidden location because you have to hike to reach it. Unfortunately, that’s no longer true.

The trail has become incredibly popular thanks to Pinterest, Instagram, and wedding photography. During summer weekends, you should expect to see hikers throughout the day. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t elope here. It simply means planning matters.

Some of my favorite ways to create a more intimate experience include:

• choosing a weekday
• visiting during spring or fall
• hiking early in the morning
• timing portraits around sunrise or sunset
• combining Elk Flats with quieter nearby locations throughout your day

Instead of expecting total solitude, I encourage couples to embrace the adventure and let me guide you to the quieter moments.

Travel Logistics for Visiting the Elk Flats

Plan Your Stay

If you’re planning an Elk Flats elopement, I almost always recommend staying in Cannon Beach or Seaside.

Cannon Beach gives you:

• the largest selection of hotels
• romantic oceanfront accommodations
• excellent restaurants
• easy access to Haystack Rock
• quick access to Ecola State Park
• only about a 15-minute drive to Elk Flats

If you’re looking for something quieter, Manzanita is another wonderful option just south of the trail.

Plan Your Travel

For most couples, the easiest airport is: Portland International Airport (PDX). From Portland, it’s about a 1 hour 45 minute drive to Cannon Beach or Elk Flats, making it the most convenient choice for out-of-state travelers.

The Best Places to Pair with Elk Flats on Your Elopement Day

One of the reasons I love recommending Elk Flats is that it’s perfectly situated along Oregon’s North Coast, making it easy to experience several incredible locations without spending hours driving. Rather than planning your entire day around one viewpoint, you can create an adventure that showcases the incredible diversity of the coastline.

Just 15 minutes north, Cannon Beach offers iconic views of Haystack Rock, wide sandy beaches, and unforgettable sunsets. Ecola State Park is another favorite, with dramatic cliff overlooks, forested trails, and panoramic ocean views. If you’re looking for a quieter stretch of coastline, Hug Point and Arcadia Beach are beautiful options where you can explore sea caves, waterfalls (depending on the season), and tide pools. To the south, Neahkahnie Mountain provides breathtaking overlooks of the coastline, while Short Sand Beach is perfect if you’re dreaming of a peaceful walk through a lush coastal forest before arriving at the ocean.

By combining Elk Flats with one or two nearby locations, you’ll enjoy a relaxed, adventure-filled elopement day while creating a gallery full of incredible variety—from towering sea stacks and sandy beaches to dramatic cliffs and mossy forests. It’s one of my favorite ways to help couples experience everything that makes the Oregon Coast so unforgettable.

5:00 PM — Hike to the overlook together

Best Time of Year to Elope at Elk Flats

Spring (April–May)
Beautiful greenery, wildflowers beginning to bloom, fewer visitors, and cooler weather. Highly underrated time to visit the Flats!

Summer (June–August)
The most reliable weather—but also the busiest season. Expect to almost always be on the trail with someone else.

Fall (September–October)
One of my favorite times to visit. The weather is often beautiful, crowds begin thinning, and sunsets are incredible.

Winter (November–March)
Expect mud, wind, rain, and rapidly changing conditions. It can be stunningly moody, but you’ll need to be flexible.

Sunrise vs. Sunset at Elk Flats

Both sunrise and sunset are beautiful times to elope at Elk Flats, but they each offer a different experience. If you’re hoping for the most privacy, sunrise is your best bet. The trail is typically much quieter in the early morning, allowing you to soak in the views with fewer hikers around.

Sunset, on the other hand, often brings warmer light and those iconic golden-hour colors over the Pacific. It’s an incredibly romantic time for portraits, but it’s also when the trail is at its busiest—especially during the summer months.

No matter which you choose, it’s worth remembering that the Oregon Coast has a mind of its own. Fog, wind, and changing weather are all part of the magic here, and they can create some of the most breathtaking, moody scenery you’ll ever experience. Embracing whatever the coast gives you is all part of the adventure.

What to Wear for Your Elk Flats Elopement

Because reaching the overlook requires a moderately steep hike, I always recommend choosing attire that’s both beautiful and practical. Comfortable hiking boots or trail shoes are a must, and many couples choose to change into their wedding shoes once they reach the ceremony spot. Flowy dresses photograph beautifully against the coastal cliffs, but don’t forget to bring layers—the Oregon Coast is known for cool temperatures, strong winds, and rapidly changing weather, even in the middle of summer.

Most importantly, wear something that allows you to move comfortably and fully enjoy the adventure. Your elopement day should feel like an experience, not something you’re constantly worried about navigating in uncomfortable clothing.

For Brides: You can most definitely wear your wedding dress on your Elk Flats hike. However, some brides opt to wear leggings and a sweatshirt for the hike, and just change on the bottom for better mobility. The choice is yours! Either way, I always emphasize durable shoes.
