Some weddings will always mean a little more to you than others. And this one? This one will forever hold a special place in my heart.
My oldest sister, Natasha, married the love of her life, Luke, in a quiet field near Blue Springs Lake in Missouri on a perfect March day. Clear skies, happy tears, a few camp chairs for grandma, and the people who love them most. Nothing extravagant, nothing overcomplicated. Just two people choosing each other, surrounded by the beauty of God’s creation.
And honestly, I don’t think it could have been more perfect.
After getting engaged, Natasha and Luke found out that the Army would be taking Luke across the country for nearly a year. Rather than put their lives on hold and wait for the perfect time to have a wedding, they decided to focus on what mattered most: getting married and beginning their life together.
So, they did just that.
They gathered their closest people, found a beautiful little spot in Missouri, and planned a micro-wedding that felt true to them. It was simple in the best possible way, leaving room for the things that mattered most — the people they love, the promises they were making, and the joy of finally becoming husband and wife.
I think there’s something so special about weddings like these. When you strip away the expectations and all the things you think you’re supposed to have, you’re left with the heart of it all. Two people making a lifelong commitment to one another.
And what a beautiful thing that is.
Blue Springs Lake made such a beautiful backdrop for their spring micro-wedding. There’s something about the Missouri landscape in early spring that feels a little understated and a little nostalgic. The open fields, the fresh air, and the soft beginnings of a new season made the whole day feel peaceful.
It was one of those days where everything seemed to fall into place. The skies were clear, the tears were happy, and the joy was practically tangible.
There weren’t hundreds of guests or a perfectly choreographed production. There were familiar faces, heartfelt hugs, a few camp chairs set up for grandma, and so much love packed into one little afternoon.
And as her sister, I got to experience the day from a perspective I’ll never take for granted. I wasn’t just documenting another wedding. I was watching someone I’ve loved my whole life step into an entirely new chapter of hers.
Seeing the pure, overwhelming joy on Natasha’s face as she married Luke is something I’ll carry with me forever.
There is one part of this day that I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put into words quite right.
In the middle of his fight with cancer, my dad put on his sharpest tuxedo and walked his oldest daughter down the aisle.
I don’t know if there’s a photograph that could ever fully capture what that moment meant to me. There was so much love in it, but also so much weight. Life was happening in all its complicated, beautiful, heartbreaking fullness, and there he was — showing up for his daughter in one of the biggest moments of her life.
It was a reminder that the most meaningful parts of a wedding aren’t always the ones you plan for. Sometimes, they’re the moments you don’t fully understand the significance of until you look back on them.
I’m so grateful we have these photographs. Not just because they’re beautiful, but because they hold a piece of our family’s story that I never want to forget.
As a wedding and elopement photographer, I spend a lot of time talking with couples about what they want their wedding day to feel like. I help them find locations, build timelines, navigate logistics, and figure out how to create a day that feels like them.
But this day was a personal reminder of why I care so much about that work in the first place.
Your wedding doesn’t have to be elaborate to be meaningful. It doesn’t need an extensive vendor team, a packed timeline, or a beautiful venue with a long list of amenities. And it certainly doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s wedding.
Sometimes, all you need is a quiet place in God’s creation, the people who have loved you through every season of life, and the person you’re choosing to walk through all the seasons still to come.
For Natasha and Luke, that looked like a quiet field in Missouri, a handful of loved ones, and a March afternoon that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.
And I think that’s pretty wonderful.
Natasha and Luke, getting to witness and photograph this chapter of your story was one of the greatest honors. I’m so happy you found each other, and I’ll forever be grateful that I got to stand beside you as you began your marriage.
Here’s to a lifetime of choosing each other.
